Keep Yourself Away From Idols | 1 John 5:18-21

How many of you read the warning labels? Most of us don’t. We assume that they’re written for somebody else. Part of the reason warning labels exist is to keep people from getting hurt. 

We read these warnings and think, “Who really needs to be told this?” Unfortunately, a lot of people disregard warnings because we think we don’t need them. But truth is, we all have the capacity to do things that we know can hurt us. A warning is given because someone else knows something about the danger that you may not know. Sometimes the most important warnings are attached to things that don’t look that dangerous but can destroy your life. 

John ends his book with a warning. He is warning us not to settle for something or someone less than Jesus. Most idols in our lives don’t look dangerous but they are deadly. The only way to guard our soul against idolatry is to examine our idols, expose them as frauds, and exchange them for Someone better.
