It is Finished! | John 19:28-30; 20:24-31

Have you ever heard the phrase, “Words create worlds?” Words are powerful. They don’t just communicate but they create. We see this in creation and in our own lives. A single phrase can change the entire trajectory of your life. A parent says, “I love you. I’m proud of you.” A coach says, “You’re on the team.” A girl says, “Yes” to your promposal. A boss says, “You’re hired.” A doctor says, “It’s cancer.” A spouse says, “Divorce.” A careless word, a word said in anger, an unfair label or a harsh criticism can linger in your life years later. It’s been said that “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can’t hurt.” That’s a lie. Words can cut deep. Words create worlds. Words said to you or by you have the power to bring life or death; give hope or inflict wounds. Some of you are still living in a world that was created by words spoken over you years ago. But there are some words, that not only shape your world, but can change your eternity.

The Bible is full of words, but as Jesus was on the Cross, He gave 7 words. There are seven because they are completely what Jesus wanted us to know as He is dying for us on the Cross. The Cross offers a glimpse into the heart of God who is willing to be with us in death and suffering, so that we would not face ultimate death and suffering. Jesus’ last words from the Cross remind us of God’s love for us and are meant to give us courage to live our lives for Him every day. In His final words from the cross, Jesus made a declaration on Friday that was proven on Sunday and now calls for a decision today: will you believe in Jesus or not?
