Courage in the Crisis | Exodus 1-2
How many of you are fans of history? I was a history major in college. I love historical movies. A few years ago there was an incredible movie called, “Unbroken.” It is based on the true story of Louis Zamperini. He was a track star in the 1936 Munich Olympics and went on to serve the US Airforce in WW2. In 1943, his B-24 bomber went down due to mechanical failure, killing 8 of the 11 crew. For 47 days, Louis and two others were were stranded in the middle of the Pacific. Finally, they were picked up, not by Americans but by the Japanese. For the next two years, Louis was in a Japanese camp, being brutally tortured by his captors. He was miraculously released and returned home. But ironically, he emerged a shell of himself and returned broken. He turned to alcohol and contemplated suicide. He couldn’t see his way out of the darkness that the crisis of his life was in. Have you ever felt like you had no future? Have you ever felt like there is no hope and that there is nothing you can do about it? Have you ever wondered where God was in all of it?
The people of God felt that way early in the book of Exodus. The book of Exodus is one of the most important books in the Bible. The story is mentioned in almost every book of the Bible. Northrop Frye: Exodus is the only thing that ever happens in the Bible. Exodus is the real-life history of how God rescued His people from their crisis and hopelessness and brought them into freedom. Exodus is the story of the Bible. If you are a Christian, Exodus is your story and mine. In Chapter 1 and 2, we see how God is moving through the crisis and the courageous to set His people free.
