Courage in your Calling | Exodus 3:1-15

Have you ever felt like God gave you a dream, a calling or a sense that you were made for something more, but deep down you don’t think you have what it takes to accomplish it? A lot of people live with the whispers of doubt and insecurity. Psychologist call this feeling: imposter syndrome. Imposter Syndrome is the idea that you’re a fraud, totally insufficient for the position you are in, and soon everyone will find out. This shows up in leaders, parents, marriages, careers and ministry. Tom Hanks said, “No matter what we’ve done, there comes a point where you think, “how did I get here? When are they going to discover that I am, in fact, a fraud?” You hear the whispers say, “I don’t belong here,” “If people really knew me, they’d realize I don’t have what it takes.” “I’m not _______ enough. What often goes into that blank for you? I am not: smart, funny, rich, pretty, young, spiritual, good enough? We often take those whispers and turn them into excuses to not live out the calling God has put into our lives. Imposter syndrome isn’t proof that you don’t belong; it’s often the evidence that you’re standing at the edge of something bigger than yourself. God always calls us to something that is bigger than us so that we won’t depend on ourselves but on Him to do it.

Long before psychologists gave it a name, Moses stood before a burning bush and asked the original imposter syndrome question: “Who am I that I should do this?” God came in an unexpected, unannounced and unrequested way to change him and then change the world through him. In Exodus 3, we learn that the courage to step into your calling comes from knowing that God has not forgotten you, God has forgiven you and God will never forsake you.
